In the weeks following the riots, 500 people gathered for a "Gay Power" demonstration in Washington Square Park, followed by a march to Sheridan Square within the West Village. Veterans of the riot formed a group, the Stonewall Veterans Association, which has continued to drive the advancement of LGBT rights from the rioting at the Stonewall Inn, to the present day. This event, together with further protests and rioting over the following nights, marked a watershed moment in the modern LGBT rights movement and the impetus for organizing LGBT pride marches on a much larger scale. Early on the morning of Saturday, June 28, 1969, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people rioted, following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, Lower Manhattan.

One of them - the Tapatio XA - is not available anywhere else in the States. This is a place with a real passion for alcohol, serving rare whiskies and tequilas. It's the bar within the bar that's the real secret reserve a table in the main area but, once you're inside, look for a door with a buzzer, use the password "books" and you'll be allowed up to the library, where the real cocktail-drinking takes place. 295 Grand Street, Williamsburg 00 1 7 īourbon and Branch, San Francisco Almost 90 years ago a real speakeasy operated out of the same building in the Tenderloin that now houses Bourbon and Branch, which aims to re-create that 1920s feel. Usually dead until about 11pm, it fills up rapidly afterwards. The bar is hidden down a long concrete hallway, marked out simply by a sign saying "Bar", but inside the cavernous loft-space has a warm, ski-lodge feel, with lots of polished wood and even a glassed-in smoking deck, from which you can gaze over the interior of the bar. Larry Lawrence, New York Across the water from Manhattan but still spiritually part of the island, Williamsburg contains some of Brooklyn's hippest addresses, and few are hipper than Larry Lawrence. I first met Aoun years ago, when he ran Bardo, a gay-friendly bar and dance venue. "We can't frustrate the community," he says. He believes the LGBT community should always have a Plan B and work around obstacles. "It's about having the guts to confront," Aoun says. And he is even more exasperated that local media took the cancellation as a sign the gay community is facing setbacks.Ī coalition of Muslim clergy has been "fighting Helem since 2005," he says. He is annoyed that a separate LGBT event was canceled after an Islamist group protested and a hotel venue backed out. "People are sick of being treated like s***," Aoun says, sipping a gin and basil cocktail. Homophobia, he says, is "a terrorism act - it's a hateful act." He heads the community center of the LGBT advocacy group Helem. Lebanese activist Joseph Aoun reflects on strides made by the country's LGBT community and the challenges that remain. According to the complaint, after the Apple executive flagged the issue to Meta, then known as Facebook, at least one Meta employee raised concerns internally that the incident could put the company at risk of having Facebook removed from the Apple App Store - a potentially devastating blow. The 2020 incident - which is detailed in the newly unredacted complaint citing internal documents - is part of a years-long history of people inside and outside of the social media giant run by Mark Zuckerberg raising concerns about young users’ exposure to sexual and inappropriate content, the attorney general alleges. The lawsuit accuses Meta of creating a “breeding ground” for child predators. An Apple executive in 2020 alerted Meta that their 12-year-old child had been “solicited” on Facebook, according to a newly unredacted version of the complaint in a lawsuit against Meta brought by New Mexico’s Attorney General in December. Rebecca (2020) Image Credit: Kerry Brown/Netflixīen Wheatley’s 2020 Netflix film ‘ Rebecca’ is not the first time that Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 classic novel of the same name has been adapted for the scene (arguably, most famously, by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940) and likely will not be the last. The critical reception of his work has shifted in tandem with changing political landscapes-prior to the 1970s, Laaksonen's art was either censored or rejected by mainstream culture, whereas after the end of the 20th century, his illustrations have been championed by gay activists and fine arts institutions alike. A naked man is, of course, beautiful, but dress him in black leather or a uniform-ah, then is more than beautiful, he is sexy!” Both the content and militaristic style of his work was informed by the artist’s time spent serving in the Finnish armed forces, and he originally began creating his erotic drawings for his own entertainment. “To me, a fully dressed man is more erotic than a naked one. “I almost never draw a completely naked man,” he once explained. An influential aesthetic force in late 20th-century gay culture, his illustrations were rendered in grayscale graphite and often featured uniformed men with exaggerated musculature and genitalia either performing or implying sexual activities. Tom of Finland, a moniker of Touko Laaksonen, was a Finnish illustrator best known for his distinctively stylized homoerotic drawings. |
